I called it "<b>In the Time of Covid</b>". <span style="color: purple; font-size: large;">I am working on a new quilt...hoping to show at Norwescon. With all that is going on in the world, my heart is not into finishing my Mermaid quilt. Don't worry, I do plan to finish it.😊😊😊 </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><span style="color: purple;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><span style="color: purple;">However, during the campaign I was very affected by the negativity from Trump and I felt the needed to put all of what I was feeling into my art. Once I had my concept I was excited to move forward. </span></span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;"><span style="color: purple;">I still have some tweaking to do on the rays, but this is a pretty close approximation of the final top. </span><span style="color: purple;">LOL...then I still have to add the border and quilt it. </span><span style="color: purple;"><br /></span></span><br />

I took that as a hint that maybe I should let everyone know my progress.</span><br />
<span style="color: purple; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: purple; font-size: large;">I have been making strides. While I was able to use my pattern for the tail, I soon discovered I really did not like the shapes I drew for the body. I ended up doing the body organically. It was more like doing a mosaic or a jigsaw puzzle. But I am really pleased with the results. All of the shapes are turn-needle and I was surprised I could work that small. I am looking forward to using this technique for future projects. </span><br />
<span style="color: purple; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: purple; font-size: large;">The face turned out a little differently than planned, but I find that my faces often have their own personality so I usually go with it as they really do not give me a choice. </span><br />
<span style="color: purple; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: purple; font-size: large;">Here is the result:</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKGzPBmOtb0t1YSnOLZeVJAiud3zwfCT7UFoBZ4TdF-F2yy5RwPf4IjGplcoGdK5In9ZSVa2xi2d-ix0HDOZoP6OTJSa32gFOzWFXkLlTRKT__G5pj4H-Y14pT1HPpHHrdBvkUsTVucXQn/s1600/20160220_171829.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="color: purple; font-size: large;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKGzPBmOtb0t1YSnOLZeVJAiud3zwfCT7UFoBZ4TdF-F2yy5RwPf4IjGplcoGdK5In9ZSVa2xi2d-ix0HDOZoP6OTJSa32gFOzWFXkLlTRKT__G5pj4H-Y14pT1HPpHHrdBvkUsTVucXQn/s640/20160220_171829.jpg" width="382" /></span></a></div>
<span style="color: purple; font-size: large;"><a href="https://photos.google.com/photo/AF1QipNO2C8oekBvIWAJMAX-F0P0MBjC-TWHTvwbZBaT"></a><br /></span>
<span style="color: purple; font-size: large;">I also started working on the ground. I quilted the blue background and then washed it for added texture. I had pre-made several pieces using a product called "Texture Magic" for the sea bed elements. I had so much fun using the beauty of the batik fabric with the quilt stitches. It really made my sea bed come alive. </span><br />
<span style="color: purple; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: purple; font-size: large;">I am now in the process of satin stitching everything down. The seaweed on the right is done. </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiHLNQ1lSi9J7gL_6Yb7guTmzbbM5O6-gsW8fqryB6BREpQ3ijY-HjJ3ZRZv-SGyLLFA7O-xB4sijlGKPKcC9m2MrpJQYBf8ByMV2yU3b2XDlgrGx5Zu6ZPDDjgaCa3wDmwgjAx1gDdWzK8/s1600/20160220_174647.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="color: purple; font-size: large;"><img border="0" height="521" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiHLNQ1lSi9J7gL_6Yb7guTmzbbM5O6-gsW8fqryB6BREpQ3ijY-HjJ3ZRZv-SGyLLFA7O-xB4sijlGKPKcC9m2MrpJQYBf8ByMV2yU3b2XDlgrGx5Zu6ZPDDjgaCa3wDmwgjAx1gDdWzK8/s640/20160220_174647.jpg" width="640" /></span></a></div>
<span style="color: purple; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: purple; font-size: large;">So you can get an idea of how everything is coming together I placed the mermaid on the ground fabric. The scales are something I am toying with right now. I don't think the scale of the scales (LOL) is quite right, I do think they need to be smaller. (Sigh...just more work...Ah well.)</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEias0gkzaAd4ZiV6g79DMeuECXtF3GS3_SmHpm5WGJiI7EAws8WRds7_JfJRyfnK6GjHOPVoMMOoXs99yLSOShghTO3qWBIJEtu2KFJpA647MbdjFGDhcwWGUS9Zwq0qzJbvSRrl2-k8Qlm/s1600/New+Doc+1_1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="color: purple; font-size: large;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEias0gkzaAd4ZiV6g79DMeuECXtF3GS3_SmHpm5WGJiI7EAws8WRds7_JfJRyfnK6GjHOPVoMMOoXs99yLSOShghTO3qWBIJEtu2KFJpA647MbdjFGDhcwWGUS9Zwq0qzJbvSRrl2-k8Qlm/s640/New+Doc+1_1.jpg" width="438" /></span></a></div>
<span style="color: purple; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: purple; font-size: large;">I do plan to add some other sea elements (starfish, sea plants, etc...) I also am still working out how add the body and hair to the quilt. Decisions, decisions.</span><br />
<span style="color: purple; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: purple; font-size: large;">Well that's it for now. Thanks again for dropping by! Teri </span><br />
<br />Teri Halbert (Theresa Lee Halbert)http://www.blogger.com/profile/04471449123080470532noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5455696430368618549.post-54362231983106650112015-10-03T15:52:00.001-07:002015-10-03T15:53:10.033-07:00And for my Next Project...Mermaid Quilt<span style="color: purple; font-size: large;">I am finally starting on my next art quilt. Actually, the drawing has been 2 years in the making. It took me awhile to get it to where I wanted it. Of course that meant I would work on it...put it to the side for several months, work on it some more...put it to the side. and then work on it some more. It was important that I had her personality and was clear on where the pattern pieces went. </span><br />
<span style="color: purple; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: purple; font-size: large;">Here is the final result:</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9RS2QtI0IrgCXzPVZ8GQUtFnZvussCbjdRJYbH7qG2kvTZDu668VKW8YFbwBV7dzKzAA3UQsc0kTlrVojZdDPBcakvXuXpZqizqMenU_UqiXLQi03yGQsdFs1cJpu6whpczM-CC04QLlK/s1600/Mermaid+Drawing-Final.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9RS2QtI0IrgCXzPVZ8GQUtFnZvussCbjdRJYbH7qG2kvTZDu668VKW8YFbwBV7dzKzAA3UQsc0kTlrVojZdDPBcakvXuXpZqizqMenU_UqiXLQi03yGQsdFs1cJpu6whpczM-CC04QLlK/s640/Mermaid+Drawing-Final.JPG" width="316" /></a></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="color: purple; font-size: large;">So then I blew it up to the size I wanted, so the final size of the actual mermaid (without the rest of the quilt) is 41"h x 25" wide. I think the final size of the quilt will be about 65"h x 50", but its hard to say. </span></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="color: purple; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><span style="color: purple;">I have decided to employ the turn-needle applique method I learned from </span><a href="http://www.barbaraolsonquiltart.com/" target="_blank"><b><span style="color: #351c75;">Barbara Olson</span></b></a><span style="color: purple;">. She is my absolute favorite quilt artist. It was her work that inspired me to go in this direction with my own artwork. (Needless to say when I had the opportunity to learn from her I was the biggest fan girl...she was awesome!) Check out her website.</span></span></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="color: purple; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="color: purple; font-size: large;">Here is my pattern just begging me to start cutting and sewing. (and yes...there will be over 150 pieces...) </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8K8UgLfqjRxUcGkvmfk07NiJNfxQZ5BmLs0gxqgTqeZk3p9iF6sS0ozqCIZDkOMMT3Lb5wUdD-P_SdI8vq6WETqIjphEshPBrGkhcXOxSz_ViTPJrSBcmv3cB4mVPfgSnWbX9opP9QKX3/s1600/Mermaid+pattern.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8K8UgLfqjRxUcGkvmfk07NiJNfxQZ5BmLs0gxqgTqeZk3p9iF6sS0ozqCIZDkOMMT3Lb5wUdD-P_SdI8vq6WETqIjphEshPBrGkhcXOxSz_ViTPJrSBcmv3cB4mVPfgSnWbX9opP9QKX3/s640/Mermaid+pattern.jpg" width="328" /></a></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="color: purple; font-size: large;">I know this looks like paint-by-numbers, but it really helps keep track of what goes where.</span></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="color: purple; font-size: large;">In addition to working on the drawing, I have been collecting fabric too. Since this is underwater, I decided to work with the batik quilt fabric. And there are many lovely colors and patterns to choose from. Here are the ones I have chosen. The background fabric is the background of the quilt where my mermaid will live. </span></div>

<span style="color: purple; font-size: large;">Next steps? Start cutting everything out. I will do this in sections so I can keep track of where I am. I I will start with the scales. They will be made with the iridescent fabric with the same technique as used in my fairy wing tutorial. I have at least 200 scales to make...It will be a long evening. :-) Then will cut out the tail and bottom fin. </span><br />

</div>
<br />
<span style="color: purple;">My absolutely wonderful and beautiful niece did become Prom Queen!!! Huzzah for Queen Manuela!!!!</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhc_Du8a5SYFv3STL4aAbtoBHK2cuFex5U6MFkyD8p6rPhI_EKcPdNKmwgwqVgj2N_ayLC7uy2UC0-ymLJKFbwMx3xnhZwk1PD84iwi4C7tHkxITkGDrFH_AFj3PUkaHDIhXDiMQ_KFLwEh/s1600/Stunning!.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="color: purple;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhc_Du8a5SYFv3STL4aAbtoBHK2cuFex5U6MFkyD8p6rPhI_EKcPdNKmwgwqVgj2N_ayLC7uy2UC0-ymLJKFbwMx3xnhZwk1PD84iwi4C7tHkxITkGDrFH_AFj3PUkaHDIhXDiMQ_KFLwEh/s1600/Stunning!.JPG" height="320" width="254" /></span></a></div>
<span style="color: purple;">It has become tradition that I design and sew the Sr. prom dresses for my nieces. For Manuela, we started this project a year ago. Manuela sent me about 50 or so different images that she liked. (I won't bore you with the details.) What it boiled down to was that she wanted something vintage with modern flair. So after reviewing her images, I started with this sketch:</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjR-N6coHznnAiSaO3ZW6JhETmABqRoKsRleoNqtgs6DHBVRl7k3TEp-n60mR3_iB5cFvgv5NjuofQLlbOI3ED_z7wOc7X6vbE8PtLCY0Fq3QR_CuSt60wjJnHq0V349SBePG_tmMOY1IUz/s1600/Manu's+Dress+-+First+Sketch.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="color: purple;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjR-N6coHznnAiSaO3ZW6JhETmABqRoKsRleoNqtgs6DHBVRl7k3TEp-n60mR3_iB5cFvgv5NjuofQLlbOI3ED_z7wOc7X6vbE8PtLCY0Fq3QR_CuSt60wjJnHq0V349SBePG_tmMOY1IUz/s1600/Manu's+Dress+-+First+Sketch.jpg" height="320" width="313" /></span></a></div>
<span style="color: purple;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: purple;">During the design process, Manuela decided to have the waist dropped to her lower hip-line and she wanted to add a belt. Based on these updates, I proceeded to draft the pattern, cut/sew the muslin. She came up to my house on 2 consecutive weekends for her fittings. Here are some images from the two fittings. During the fittings, Manu decided she did not want sleeves.</span><br />

<span style="color: purple;">We only had one day to do the final fitting. During the fitting we decided to remove the top two layers of the skirt as they were weighing down the netting and crinoline (Yes...we ended up with crinoline under all of this...created from a bridal slip and attached at the seam-line.)</span><br />

<span style="color: #351c75; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #351c75; font-size: large;">The Artshow was fantastic. I was able to get feedback from Robert Gould, the Artist Guest of Honor and from Lee Moyer, who was the Artist Guest of Honor last year. Of course Rob Carlos was also very (very) helpful and inspirational. </span><br />
<span style="color: #351c75; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #351c75; font-size: large;">On top of that I really got to bond with several of the other artists in the Art Show, including John Grey III, Lizzie D and Michael Duquette. </span><br />
<span style="color: #351c75; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #351c75; font-size: large;">I was truly inspired by the amount of talent that was at the artshow and am honored to have been more involved this year. I am even more motivated and am looking forward to taking my art even further. </span><br />
<span style="color: #351c75; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #351c75; font-size: large;">I premiered 5 new pieces and will be posting the photos later this week. As for sales, I did pretty well. I sold 3 bags and 2 of them at the direct sales price. This is very encouraging. As some of you may know, pricing is always tricky. This year I tried a new formula: the Minimum bid reflected the price I was willing to let it go (wholesale) and the direct sales price was my ideal price (retail, or the price that reflects the amount of work I put into it.)</span><br />
<span style="color: #351c75; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #351c75; font-size: large;">So here are the 3 pieces I sold. It really is like having your children leave the nest (So to speak :-))</span><br />

<span style="color: #351c75;"><span style="font-size: large;">Well...</span></span><span style="color: #351c75; font-size: large;">I thought I would post my latest status. </span><span style="color: #351c75; font-size: large;">Things are moving along on my latest dragon quilt...but I am moving a little bit more slowly than anticipated...Doesn't that does ALWAYS seem to the case? (sigh)</span></div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><span style="color: #351c75;"></span></span><br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #351c75; font-size: large;">Anyway...</span><span style="color: #351c75; font-size: large;"> </span></div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><span style="color: #351c75;">
<div style="text-align: left;">
I have everything cut-out and the quilt base done (Not quilted yet...but ready to be quilted....) Here is the final lay-out...The pink lines by the flowers represent where I am going to out some decorative stitching for the stems. (the spines are done...but not in the layout below...)</div>

This does machine needle felting and expanded my horizons to thread/fabric paint for my artwork and bags.</span><br />
<span style="color: purple; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: purple; font-size: large;">It did take a bit to get over my fear of using the machine but I finally worked on a project that I hope becomes a bag. I anticipate this Blog will be in 3 parts:</span><br />
<span style="color: purple; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: purple; font-size: large;">1. Showing the steps I did to machine felt the fabric (See below)</span><br />
<span style="color: purple; font-size: large;">2. Bead embroidering the fabric. </span><br />
<span style="color: purple; font-size: large;">3. The final result. </span><br />
<span style="color: purple; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<span style="color: purple; font-size: large;">I started with this beautiful purple heather wool....</span><br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2_EstlPsxey4RAfUMa4X9EXnjVwOdDZZEYTUr0TnR5beXIsIFOKHZaiFJ4mI6DCMFBibMKSSn4Tn4R-QEUsg7P5j-YK1VuVj7I7S1ctQBwWC7Ls7qtBzIeaapJSSR8ZzLmbuqXzWjmJnF/s1600/20140209_104724.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><span style="color: purple;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2_EstlPsxey4RAfUMa4X9EXnjVwOdDZZEYTUr0TnR5beXIsIFOKHZaiFJ4mI6DCMFBibMKSSn4Tn4R-QEUsg7P5j-YK1VuVj7I7S1ctQBwWC7Ls7qtBzIeaapJSSR8ZzLmbuqXzWjmJnF/s1600/20140209_104724.jpg" height="180" width="320" /></span></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="color: purple; font-size: large;">Base Layer</span></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<span style="color: purple; font-size: large;">I experimented on a some of this wool before I moved into the final landscape. Here are some of the effects:</span><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_Scle1nMzAcEvC-OUnGz959jLy8k3IwvsLc47uVVDTtIcnEA2lmz2tk7mBc1vR3LcRZseYXtjwmtPMndQBnwx6fk5b9baZrSWQM27pmwKNuCCeLwDbQ_KyvwDGTUsf2KDABcBV2pbrGCt/s1600/Machine+in+use.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><span style="color: purple;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_Scle1nMzAcEvC-OUnGz959jLy8k3IwvsLc47uVVDTtIcnEA2lmz2tk7mBc1vR3LcRZseYXtjwmtPMndQBnwx6fk5b9baZrSWQM27pmwKNuCCeLwDbQ_KyvwDGTUsf2KDABcBV2pbrGCt/s1600/Machine+in+use.jpg" height="249" width="320" /></span></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="color: purple; font-size: large;">Experiment with Roving. <br />This was a cool effect, but ended up not using it for this bag.</span></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: purple;"><br /></span><table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="color: purple; font-size: large;">This was the experiment. I know this picture isn't clear, <br />but I ended up using 2 of the 4 elements I played with.</span></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
</div>
<span style="color: purple; font-size: large;">This is the final result. You can also machine felt with yarn. That is where the spirals came from. I still have a couple of tweaks, but overall I am pleased. I imagine I will get better once I really learn what the machine can and can't do.....</span><span style="color: purple; font-size: large; text-align: right;">But the possibilities are endless!!!!</span><div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFqJRvnNEPH02S2kOzM-bzhj7T3I-2rV2Me4wCKCs3Kf5U8flA-A0J5n__12eCskT8a771XPQ7LsAMyhXXndV5H05-hsAUGB7jJUvBRwNqTWMNMo9mMOcxIwvHc-JKc-EsGq6gS_koU1UB/s1600/Final+Landscape.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><span style="color: purple;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFqJRvnNEPH02S2kOzM-bzhj7T3I-2rV2Me4wCKCs3Kf5U8flA-A0J5n__12eCskT8a771XPQ7LsAMyhXXndV5H05-hsAUGB7jJUvBRwNqTWMNMo9mMOcxIwvHc-JKc-EsGq6gS_koU1UB/s1600/Final+Landscape.jpg" height="320" width="297" /></span></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="color: purple;">Now I just need to</span><span style="color: purple;"></span><span style="color: purple;"><br /> add my beads and then make the bag!!</span></span></td></tr>

<span style="color: #351c75;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #351c75;">So....(Drum roll please)....Welcome to Dragon Ragz. I chose this name not just to reflect my obvious love of dragons, but to give a quick description of what my work stands for. <b><u>Dragon </u></b>stands for </span><span style="color: #351c75;">my point of view...taking an idea and using </span><span style="color: #351c75;">Color and Texture as an important part of telling the story. The </span><b style="color: #351c75;"><u>Ragz </u></b><span style="color: #351c75;">speaks to my love of using found fabrics,trims and unconventional materials whenever possible.</span><br />
<span style="color: #351c75;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #351c75;">This new name, I feel, allows me to express my love of art through the fabric medium.. Be it bags, wall art, clothing/costumes or any other idea that suits the idea I want to convey</span><br />
<span style="color: #351c75;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #351c75;">Please keep an eye out as I continue to post my projects and adventures. I am really excited about the direction I am heading. </span><br />
<span style="color: #351c75;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #351c75;">Cheers, Teri </span><br />

<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: purple; font-size: large;">It will debut at Orycon in November. (<a href="http://35.orycon.org/" style="text-align: center;">http://35.orycon.org/</a>) More on this later as I will be a panelist and a judge for the Masquerade. This year promises to be so fun...I can't wait.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: purple; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: purple; font-size: large;">I have another bag I have started. I was inspired by some fabric cuttings a friend gave me from work, (Thanks Stephanie!) I don't have a title yet, but I already have the front and back prepped. I just need to create and add the applique (It will be a red dragon based on Celtic tattoo art.) and then put it together. I have a fabulous black, white and red lining in a Japanese print that I found in one of my Goodwill adventures.</span></div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: purple; font-size: large;">Last but not least...I can finally post pics of the box I did for my niece, Manuela. It was for her birthday in July. I beaded a turtle from one of my mom's favorite shirts. I appliqued it on to a Balinese print and thread-painted the floral pattern. I then attached it on top of a wonderful cedar cigar box I found at Goodwill. I named it "Red Sea Turtle: <i>maybe Moses had a little help</i>". Manu loved it!</span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;"><span style="color: purple;">I was immediately inspired to make a messenger bag. I envisioned doing the wolf's head with a satin-stitch outline and the fur in a 3-D effect out of different quilting cottons prints. </span></span><br />

I am going to post more regularly. </span><br />
<span style="color: purple; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: purple; font-size: large;">Quick recap... I had a great showing at Chicon. Sold 5 items including one that went to auction. At Norwescon 37, my "Guardian of Avalon" took third place and in addition, I sold 2 more bags. I am so pleased and honored that my work is being well received.</span><br />
<span style="color: purple; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: purple; font-size: large;">As a starting ground for my next series of blogs, I decided to take you through the creation of one of my pieces.</span><br />
<span style="color: purple; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: purple; font-size: large;">I had an idea of creating a Chinese dragon with jersey heather cuttings I can get from work. They are variegated in color so the scales would truly have an ombre effect.</span><br />
<span style="color: purple; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: purple; font-size: large;">So I was sketching basic dragon bodies...was not liking anything I was sketching. I sketched one dragon and it looked wrong...but I kept staring at it...so I decided stick some wings on it. I ended up with a very different direction. </span><br />

<span style="color: purple; font-size: large;">Realized he was looking at something and in the original face he was slightly bemused. Now? I can't tell if he is protective or hungry. I have almost finished the face of two con bags. Pictured below is one I am calling "Destination: Moon". This is a nod to Robert Heinlein. I thought the clean lines of the rocket used in the movie was a great image for this "retro" inspired fabric.<i> (And my thanks to Thor for his suggestion...he has all sorts of "retro" space material for me to draw upon..Looking forward to incorporating more of these images into other bags!)</i><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiXUPhyphenhyphenZOZ2ANx1U0VSqg9pyl26XH21uDi6HSiFeUSuQ_1nMDYBb3VlH0XmwY-UAAm1Lo03Hix8arfDSS95VOjdoW_QS3BCjQ0ktxackWTObSxzuG5fUprfK9AtwCwwlzUKobYKx_XNe1Zp/s1600/Destination.Moon.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiXUPhyphenhyphenZOZ2ANx1U0VSqg9pyl26XH21uDi6HSiFeUSuQ_1nMDYBb3VlH0XmwY-UAAm1Lo03Hix8arfDSS95VOjdoW_QS3BCjQ0ktxackWTObSxzuG5fUprfK9AtwCwwlzUKobYKx_XNe1Zp/s320/Destination.Moon.jpg" width="282" /></a></div>
I am also in the process of beading my "Star" bag <i>(Title still to be determined.) </i>For this bag, in addition to the beading, I wanted to have a few textured stars. After my search could not produce anything, I decided to create them. So I used a silver netting layered over a satin to make an applique'. I think this helped create a fun, yet elegant bag. Here is the front flap.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIyNS-Ykhn6NlMpa8jMX4UZrqZTYF97zz7pIlP4lrzQ7pcIlcGNFTE0gBpPC5Hz8y9zsPZ6t7KNwn6-gOHcKvIJb7iMEhzGtG9D9oOrhr4spOuxft5sp-MrWB9xA3PG4c3j2mGiP-_AhhG/s1600/Star+Bag.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIyNS-Ykhn6NlMpa8jMX4UZrqZTYF97zz7pIlP4lrzQ7pcIlcGNFTE0gBpPC5Hz8y9zsPZ6t7KNwn6-gOHcKvIJb7iMEhzGtG9D9oOrhr4spOuxft5sp-MrWB9xA3PG4c3j2mGiP-_AhhG/s320/Star+Bag.jpg" width="262" /></a></div>
Below are my first foray into doing Hobo Bags. There are so many inspiring cotton prints out there that I wanted to use to use them. It came to me that Hobo Bags were a great way to utilize these fabrics. Of course I could not just leave them as prints so I had to embellished them. <i>(...More to come on the techniques I am using.)</i><br />
This one is called, "Play Day of the Dead".<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhdzMNa0Y-dfQSLgAZtHDW9r20-rZmuL3KgkGrFIPV5BVgQQJjEtFwheuslcT8YDx210a-xaW8qTRwTAvCNOEXdgnVxUMCvgeYaGOs8rHMHH8uonFgbRdVXn0JrQZFsnfPSzCPuXAlADLJy/s1600/Play+Day+of+the+Dead.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhdzMNa0Y-dfQSLgAZtHDW9r20-rZmuL3KgkGrFIPV5BVgQQJjEtFwheuslcT8YDx210a-xaW8qTRwTAvCNOEXdgnVxUMCvgeYaGOs8rHMHH8uonFgbRdVXn0JrQZFsnfPSzCPuXAlADLJy/s320/Play+Day+of+the+Dead.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
And this one is called "The Final Frontier". Being a huge Star Trek fan, I wanted to, in my own small way, pay homage to the series. Do you think I do it justice?<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I have not yet started on my messenger bags. I will let you know when I have something to show.<br />

<span style="background-color: white;">We</span><span style="background-color: white;">ll that's it for now...I am excitedly waiting for my labels to come in so I can actually start putting together the bags....Can't wait! </span><span style="background-color: white;">Love Long and Prosper! Here is a link to Chicon.<a href="http://www.chicon.org/"> http://www.chicon.org</a><br />
<br />
I received great feedback on the quilt I have shown at both Orycon and Norwescon. Unfortunately, it was not for sale since I made it for my niece. But I still had the pattern. (Half of the work was developing the pattern.) So I decided to do a series of 10 quilts using this pattern.<br />
<br />
Here is a photo of the original quilt. This one is called "Mother Dragon"<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOPwzi3zaSKbzEjKI_DHeXVFSas6xQOzKZTPSGgh-lfKYmwcOoOrGBptcqhoAkFJm6Jrs1F4Q6BzRQDwctrXgHcLQqYeB0vUB5ZnhiN5qTFJMIjLf40UmRsHVCnZFgyJSOUH3k35qU6Gy_/s1600/2012-05-29+18.57.37.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOPwzi3zaSKbzEjKI_DHeXVFSas6xQOzKZTPSGgh-lfKYmwcOoOrGBptcqhoAkFJm6Jrs1F4Q6BzRQDwctrXgHcLQqYeB0vUB5ZnhiN5qTFJMIjLf40UmRsHVCnZFgyJSOUH3k35qU6Gy_/s400/2012-05-29+18.57.37.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
For Chicon, I decided to work on the 2nd installment. And I have been working hard this version. I do not have a name for it yet, but I wanted something rich in texture and color. I finished the dragon and am now in the process of basting it to the background. Here is a sneak peak. <i>(Note the pins...tee hee...still have tons of basting to do...)</i><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiV0_KxBVGp_9Hnl_aF6DR1bWaSp1a0cxLMGA5jMiC2YqkB-z6aGR3yoGLUl3jWT5v3DTp7yOLW95Vn0e0j9FdYJgs8UDu36NAv3Yryo08vFNoRYTYMOJIKiTNUgPPk9auj6d7ZlEmcPIeL/s1600/2012-05-28+20.28.26.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiV0_KxBVGp_9Hnl_aF6DR1bWaSp1a0cxLMGA5jMiC2YqkB-z6aGR3yoGLUl3jWT5v3DTp7yOLW95Vn0e0j9FdYJgs8UDu36NAv3Yryo08vFNoRYTYMOJIKiTNUgPPk9auj6d7ZlEmcPIeL/s400/2012-05-28+20.28.26.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
In addition to the Dragon Quilt, I am expanding my "Con Bag" collection. The idea behind these bags is to have one-of-a kind art bags that a con-goer can use. It has slots for your credit cards, ID and room key, a small pouch for cash, lipstick or whenever and the purse is big enough to hold a smart phone and a small pad of paper. I am always looking for found: fabrics, whether its from the fabric store, Goodwill or yard sales. Since I love to use texture and color, the back will always be a different fabric from the front. Here are photos of a couple I have shown in other shows.<br />
<br />
This one is called "Dragon on the Prowl". The Dragon is hand-beaded and the pattern was free-formed as I beaded it on upholstery fabric. The back is 100% cotton and is machine embroidered. Lining is 100% cotton.<br />

I will be showing these at Chicon as well in addition to a few more bags. I hope to start my next batch this weekend.<br />
<br />
Well, that's it for now....I will post again when I am further along in my next project and may reveal some of my other bead/fabric art. :-)<br />
<br />
Cheers, TeriTeri Halbert (Theresa Lee Halbert)http://www.blogger.com/profile/04471449123080470532noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5455696430368618549.post-68611254325657098372012-02-09T12:38:00.000-08:002012-02-09T12:38:28.273-08:00Trying Again!!!!After much trial and tribulation...(It appears I set-up multiple blogs.) I am once again going to attempt to blog on a regular basis.<br />
Okay....I have lots of things happening. First I want to update everyone on my status. I have been in a few art shows now (and actually won Director's Choice at Orycon 31). I have also been in a couple of masquerades. I took Best of Show for Workmanship at Norwescon and with our group "Stempunk Wizard of Oz" took Best Journeyman for Workmanship at Worldcon.<br />
<br />
<br />
As soon as I can collect all of the photos I will be posting them....<br />
<br />
I took a break from doing the art shows to get married...My husband Thor is very loving and supportive.<br />
Now that we are established in a new home, (and a new city and job for me) I want to be more active in my blog. I have an opportunity to Participate in the 1912 Project, recreating fashions from the Titanic.<br />
<br />
I will also be working on new costumes for Norwescon for Thor and myself. Will be blogging on that progress as well. (Need to find my camera charger...lol) In addition, I have plans to sell items through Etsy and am contemplating entering the art show at Worldcon this year in Chicago. (Yes we are going....)<br />
<br />
oh...I do need to update my profile (baby steps..Teri...baby steps)<br />
<br />
Stay Tuned! Teri (Theresa)Teri Halbert (Theresa Lee Halbert)http://www.blogger.com/profile/04471449123080470532noreply@blogger.com1
